Several Automakers Consider Discontinuing Large Luxury Hybrids After Lukewarm Sales

Not all experiments end well, as the auto industry has been finding out after offering gas saving hybrid models for vehicles that are known for having low fuel economy. So few of these vehicles were sold that automakers are now wondering whether they’re even worth engineering. General Motors, after offering hybrid versions of its new generations of Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon, and Chevrolet Tahoe SUVs, has decided to pull the plug. Even though the Escalade hybrid delivered 21 miles per gallon (combined driving conditions), up 31% from the non-hybrid’s 16 combined, “No one bought them,” says David Schiavone, marketing manager for the Escalade. “And they were great.” Mercedes-Benz and Lexus have also been pulling back on their offerings. One of the issues with selling the hybrid cars,...

Dentist Shortage Forces Dental Therapists to Pick Up the Slack

A nationwide shortage in the number of dentists has caused an influx in the number of states that are licensing dental therapists -- and are being met with resistance from the dentists themselves, a May 6 USA Today article reports. Only a handful of states currently allow dental therapists -- a dentist's equivalent of a physician's assistant -- to be licensed. Dental therapists get two years of intensive training before entering the field, where their work consists mainly of dental cleanings and procedures like extractions, according to the article. However, now that there is a lack of dentists across the country, these states are turning to dental therapists to pick up more responsibility. According to Delta Dental Insurance company data, about three times as many people across t...

Alaska’s Constitutional Amendment Banning Same-Sex Marriage Is Being Challenged

Five same-sex couples have filed a lawsuit this past Monday challenging Alaska's 1998 constitutional amendment that defines marriage as solely being between a man and a woman on the grounds that it's unconstitutional. The suit hopes to not only overturn the gay marriage ban, but to also force Alaska to recognize same-sex marriages from other states and countries. Times have changed in the 16 years since Alaskan voters approved the amendment. In the past year alone, federal courts have opposed state constitutional bans from a variety of different states, while other states like Hawaii and Illinois have legalized same-sex marriage. Also, the U.S. Supreme Court shot down the Defense of Marriage Act this year, which would have prevented same-sex, married couples from being able to receiv...

Firefighters Blame Overloaded Extension Cords for Apartment Fire

In Braintree, Massachusetts, firefighters suspect that a recent fire might have been caused by an electrical issue. This pastThursday, the three floor apartment building, known as Braintree Gardens, had a smoke alarm go off early in the early morning. The hallways were filled with a dense, black smoke, causing many residents to flee to their small, outdoor balconies, rather than try and navigate to the inside stairways. Luckily, firefighters were on the scene within minutes, and knocked out first and second story windows so that residents could be escorted down and out of the building, and into the area parking lot. "They were great. They got us out right away," said resident Scott Bradley, who had been stuck in his third-floor unit. The fire is currently under investigation by firefi...

New Driver Safety Program Shows Teens the Consequences of Texting While Driving

A new driving simulator called "Drive Smart Virginia" hopes to show youth the effects of texting while driving. Since it's only a simulator, the program will show teens the repercussions of texting while driving without having to face any of the consequences. "I was texting my friend Morgan saying 'Hey' and I killed a guy," said Highschool freshman Ericka Lester after she experienced the simulator. Texting isn't the only way to get distracted while driving. Eating, drinking, talking, grooming, as well as using a mobile device for anything--to update social media, check emails, or read sports scores--can increase a driver's chance of getting into an accident. However, since texting is the one activity that can take a driver's eyes off the road for the longest time, it's the most dange...

In Response to Upcoming Emissions Standards Update, Subaru Considers Electric Car

For carmakers around the world, increasingly strict global CO2 emissions standards seem to be pointing in one direction: the electric engine. According to DigitalTrends.com, Subaru is the latest auto manufacturer to consider further development of an electric car model to introduce in the U.S. before emissions regulations are tightened again in 2018, according to The Japan News. Currently, American car purchases account for about half of Subaru's global sales. “Electric vehicles are [effective] products to help cope with these new regulations,” Yasuyuki Yoshinaga, president of Subaru parent Fuji Heavy Industries, told The Japan News. Subaru will likely make a decision by the end of the year. While Subaru has previously experimented with electric cars in the last five years, this i...
