8-Year-Old Flint Resident Convinces Obama to Visit the City

President Obama is expected to visit Flint, MI, next month to see firsthand the effects of the on-going water crisis the city has been facing. The decision to visit stems from a letter 8-year-old Flint resident Mari Copeny sent the President, asking if she could meet him. Copeny wrote her concerns about the effects of the water contamination on not just herself but others in her community. In her letter, she requested to meet with both President Obama and the First Lady. "I am one of the children that is effected by this water, and I've been doing my best to march in protest and to speak out for all the kids that live here in Flint," Copeny wrote. "I know this is probably an odd request but I would love for a chance to meet you or your wife. My mom said chances are you will be to...

Four Orphaned Bear Cubs Found Under Lake Tahoe Deck

It is estimated that 100,000 black bears live in Alaska, but that's not the only place these creatures roam. Four orphaned black bear cubs were found shivering and cold underneath the deck of a Nevada house this week. They were rescued and taken to an animal sanctuary. The owner of the house in Stateline, on Lake Tahoe, said that she had first seen the cubs with their mother under the deck in March. But the four adorable fur balls are without parents after their mother, an 18 year old sow, was found dead from unknown causes. It is thought that the cubs weigh only seven pounds -- officials think they were born sometime in January. Four cubs at once is something of an anomaly. "Twins are fairly common," says Nevada Department of Wildlife spokesman Chris Healy, "three is like wow, bu...

Hudson Falls Man Steals Thousands From Elderly Man, Faces Charges in Three Cities

A Hudson Falls man faces numerous felony charges for criminal possession of a forged instrument as well as misdemeanor petit larceny for cashing checks that had been stolen from an 80-year-old Hudson resident during his hospitalization. Police say Allen R. Cox, 40, faces four counts of criminal possession in total. Cox made out roughly $2,000 worth of checks to himself in the victim’s name and cashed them at banks in Queensbury, Glens Falls, and South Glens Falls. All three municipalities are cooperating in the investigation and charging Cox separately, according to the Post Star. The checkbook had been stolen from the victim’s home some weeks earlier, while he was admitted to the hospital for emergency care. The theft comes at a time when attacks on the elderly are skyrocketin...

Authorities Believe Cooling Tower at Australia Hospital the Cause of Recent Legionnaire’s Disease Outbreak

One of Sydney's biggest public hospitals is the site of the city's second Legionnaire's disease outbreak in a month and health authorities believe the hospital's cooling tower could be the source. According to The Sydney Morning Herald, the country's Department of Health reported that at least three people have been infected with the bacterial lung infection after spending time in or near St. George Hospital in Kogarah. The three victims of the most recent outbreak are two men, ages 64 and 76, and one 85-year-old woman. They are currently under treatment at St. George and all are reportedly recovering. All three of them had been in the area of St. George Hospital before coming down with the illness. "We are investigating the source of the contamination of the three cases and we ca...

Why are Americans So Anti-Vacation?

Americans work hard. So hard, in fact, that fewer and fewer people in the American workforce are inclined to take a vacation. Take the Volk family, for example. For the past five years, Briana and her husband Andrew have accomplished a lot. Not only have they opened a successful cocktail bar in Portland, ME, but Briana has also given birth to a child and launched her own marketing firm. Yet despite all of this success, the two hadn't found the time to take a vacation -- a hard-earned one, at that. “We’re good at getting into the trap of working all the time. So stepping away from that felt a little selfish. We both felt we always needed to be working,” Volk said in an interview with the Boston Globe. And even when the Volks finally managed to get away to Palm Springs in February...

New Business Empowers Women in North Dakota

A woman in North Dakota recently launched a new business that offers workshops for women in car and home repair. The idea for the company, Misfix, was conceived while Amanda McKinnon was at the Women's Startup Weekend in Fargo last April. An entrepreneur with her own marketing company, she was originally there to discuss her work and inspire other women. Little did she know that inspiration would come to her. While discussing how her father had taught her plumbing and other handy repair skills, she realized that not many women had been offered the opportunity to learn these things at a young age. It was then that she decided to create a business to help women become self-sufficient in these male-dominated, but entirely necessary, areas. McKinnon will be offering workshops througho...

Propane Tank Explosions Rock Several Cities Just Hours Apart

Firefighters in several towns across America were kept busy this week as multiple propane tank explosions occurred just hours apart. When emergency teams arrived at the scene of the blaze that took place in Jersey City on March 22, a leaking propane tank ruptured and was propelled several hundred feet into the air and then outwards, where it landed adjacent to the nearby light-rail tracks. Remarkably, nobody was injured, nor did the operators of the light-rail service need to shut down for any period of time. In Fargo on the very same day, things could have gotten much worse. Small propane tanks also unexpectedly burst there, though the presence of a much larger 300-pound tank made the situation all the more daunting for emergency responders. The large tank did not burst, but one ...

Lowlife Thief Robs Innocent Texas Girl Scouts

In the Austin, Texas suburb of Oak Hill, a low-life thief has taught one Girl's Scout Troop a valuable lesson -- people are horrible. This March, an unknown burglar broke into the local Girl Scout's equipment shed by smashing a padlocked door. Once inside, the thief stole $2,000 worth of camping equipment, the fruits of the girls' cookie selling labors. And because the equipment shed stored equipment for multiple troops, the thief has deprived thousands of southwest Austin girls of their camping equipment, including tents, stoves, coolers, and more. The girls may be able to get their equipment back, but their innocence is gone forever. “The girls really don’t understand why someone would break in and steal all their camping equipment. I think that’s the big question they have. Why...

U.S. Department of Defense Set to Host ‘Hack the Pentagon’ Competition

Hacking into a federal website would typically be grounds for a lengthy prison sentence, but the U.S. government recently announced that it will actually be rewarding anyone who can find a weak spot in its coding. According to Fox News, the Department of Defense is preparing to host the first-ever "Hack the Pentagon" competition. As part of the program, vetted hackers will be allowed and encouraged to attack the government's cybersecurity systems in hopes of finding a flaw that can be improved upon. In a statement announcing the competition, the Department of Defense revealed that a select group of hackers will participate in a "controlled, limited duration program that will allow them to identify vulnerabilities on a predetermined department system." "I am always challengin...
