How Geothermal Heating Equipment Works

Once the heat is absorbed by the ground loop, it is transferred to the geothermal heat pump. Inside the pump, a refrigerant absorbs the heat from the water solution, and a compressor increases the refrigerant’s temperature. This heat is then distributed throughout the building via a standard duct system or radiant floor heating. In the summer, the process is reversed. The heat pump extracts heat from the indoor air and transfers it back into the ground, effectively cooling the building. This cycle makes geothermal heating equipment highly efficient, as it leverages the Earth’s natural thermal energy.
