Could Mice Be the Key to Reversing the Aging Process?

There may never come a time when people stop looking for anti-aging treatments. From Botox, to collagen, to facial fillers, people are continuously searching for a way to reverse the aging process. A new study shows that young mice could hold the key to the fountain of youth. A few days ago, scientists from Harvard University, Stanford University, and the University of California, San Francisco, published findings that found pumping older mice with the blood of younger mice reversed the aging process in the older mice. Research showed that four weeks after the older mice had been injected with the young blood, they were able to stay on the treadmill for a longer period of time, and latent blood vessels in their brains were activated, adding strength to their hearts and muscles. Alaska’s Constitutional Amendment Banning Same-Sex Marriage Is Being Challenged

Five same-sex couples have filed a lawsuit this past Monday challenging Alaska's 1998 constitutional amendment that defines marriage as solely being between a man and a woman on the grounds that it's unconstitutional. The suit hopes to not only overturn the gay marriage ban, but to also force Alaska to recognize same-sex marriages from other states and countries. Times have changed in the 16 years since Alaskan voters approved the amendment. In the past year alone, federal courts have opposed state constitutional bans from a variety of different states, while other states like Hawaii and Illinois have legalized same-sex marriage. Also, the U.S. Supreme Court shot down the Defense of Marriage Act this year, which would have prevented same-sex, married couples from being able to receiv...

To Promote New Album, Daily News Gives Away Carlos Santana-Signed Guitar

This past Monday, 39-year-old Jovany Tavarez from the Bronx got a taste of guitar great Carlos Santana's own handiwork when he was able to take home a custom Paul Reed Smith guitar signed by the master himself. No, there was no "Black Magic Woman" to thank for the feat -- Taverez was the lucky winner of a contest held by the New York Daily News' Viva publication, a Latino lifestyle magazine. Tavarez, a social worker, participated in Viva's contest (which HBO Latino co-sponsored) along with nearly 800 other entrants and became the sole victor on May 5. His prize package includes the instrument itself, a custom Paul Reed Smith guitar emblazoned with Santana's face on the body with psychedelic and traditional Latin-inspired artwork decorating it. Santana's signature lies just near the guit...

Fox to Get Rid of Saturday Night Animation Block

Fox TV has made the decision to axe its "underperforming" Animation Domination HD block of programming. The Saturday night program's last night will be June 28; no replacement for the 11 p.m. hour has yet been announced, according to Broadcasting and Cable. The Animation Domination High Def (ADHD) brand will continue on digital platforms off the air, including FoxADHD.com, Broadcast and Cable reported. Sunday's primetime Animation Domination block, which airs shows like The Simpsons and Family guy, is staying put, executives said. Animation Domination's Saturday night block, which had been geared toward young males and resembled Cartoon Network's Adult Swim programming, made its debut last year. Fox describes ADHD as “alternative animated series, shorts and user-adapted material.” ...

New Driver Safety Program Shows Teens the Consequences of Texting While Driving

A new driving simulator called "Drive Smart Virginia" hopes to show youth the effects of texting while driving. Since it's only a simulator, the program will show teens the repercussions of texting while driving without having to face any of the consequences. "I was texting my friend Morgan saying 'Hey' and I killed a guy," said Highschool freshman Ericka Lester after she experienced the simulator. Texting isn't the only way to get distracted while driving. Eating, drinking, talking, grooming, as well as using a mobile device for anything--to update social media, check emails, or read sports scores--can increase a driver's chance of getting into an accident. However, since texting is the one activity that can take a driver's eyes off the road for the longest time, it's the most dange...

Tennessee Wedding Venue Declines to Host Same-Sex Commitment Ceremony

Two veterans of the Iraq War have publicly denounced a wedding venue that refused to host their same-sex commitment ceremony after initially agreeing to it. Anthony Wilfert and his partner, Brian Blas, of Nolensville, Tenn., thought they had found the perfect venue in Nashville's Mint Springs Farm, a private venue without religious affiliation, according to the Huffington Post. Upon their initial tour of the farm, employees assured the couple they would be welcome to book the venue for their commitment ceremony. Wilfert told the Huffington Post that the two Mint Springs employees "explicitly made it clear that it was not an issue, that they would host that type of ceremony." Just two days later, Mint Springs' owner sent Wilfert and Blas an email saying the farm would not be able t...

New Report Finds America Employed, but Perhaps at the Cost of the Housing Market

After spending the better part of a decade in disaster mode, the American economy has used the past four years to gradually bounce back to a relatively stable state, according to recent reports. In fact, millions of Americans are now back to work. But of course, with these numbers come a bit of good news and a bit of bad news. The good news? A bolstered economy means an enlivened workforce, with nearly 4 million jobs being created in the past few years. The bad news? The overwhelming majority of these employment opportunities have come at places like McDonald's, Taco Bell and retail shops in strip malls. In a grander sense, the economy's bounce-back has yielded far more low-paying jobs than better-paid ones. But who cares, as long as there are jobs at all, right? The housing market, ...

Wrongful Death Complaint Filed Against Tough Mudder by 2013 Victim’s Estate

In the world of competitive athleticism, the Tough Mudder obstacle race ranks high near the top. In fact, according to the event's own promotional materials, it's "probably the toughest event on the planet." The 12-mile race, which was designed by British Special Forces to help participants overcome common human fears like fire and heights, is held in different spots internationally each year. At the 2013 Mid-Atlantic Tough Mudder, however, tragedy struck when Avishek Sengupta, a participant, drowned while competing in the "Walk the Plank" obstacle. Now, Sengupta's parents have filed a wrongful death complaint through West Virginia's Marshall County second circuit court. The legal team, comprised of professionals from Boston's Gilbert and Renton firm, lists a number of different orga...
