She met Evans, a hotel heir, at a party in 2017 and the two have been dating since.
Bilton covers all things Silicon Valley for the magazine and although he did not attend the wedding himself, he has confirmed with his sources that the rumors of Holmes’s nuptials are true. The story of the secret wedding broke on June 14, but Bilton did not confirm whether the wedding took place in June, which is the most popular month to get married with 15% of couples tying the knot then, or if they entered wedded bliss sometime in the months prior. Bilton did report that he had heard that no people from Theranos were invited to the wedding, despite Holmes still maintaining friendships with some of her Theranos colleagues.
Theranos is at the center of the whirlwind of rumors surrounding the secret wedding in another major way. Many people in Silicon Valley believe that the wedding happened so secretly and so soon after word of their engagement broke in March because Holmes needs help paying her legal expenses.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office in San Francisco charged Holmes last year with nine counts of wire fraud and two counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Her ex-boyfriend and the former president of Theranos, Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani, was charged with the same counts. They both pleaded not guilty and face up to 20 years in prison.
Holmes has taken most of the public heat in the Theranos scandal primarily because of her dramatic trajectory. She started as Forbes’ wealthiest self-made female billionaire, among the 40% of new entrepreneurs in the U.S. who are women. Now, she is a woman about to take the stand on serious criminal charges.
The public’s interest in Evans piqued when rumors of the two dating started to surface. Users on social media found photos of the couple on their various accounts to confirm the relationship.
In April, a source told The New York Post that Evans’s parents, William and Susan Evans, don’t approve of their son’s relationship with Holmes. As the Evans family owns three top hotels in Southern Calfornia, their hesitancy to welcome a known scam artist into the family isn’t surprising.
According to a colleague of Evans, many of his friends and family members have tried to warn him about getting too close to Holmes. As his parents are well-off and certainly not among the 23 million older adults in the U.S. who are economically insecure, his loved ones likely didn’t want Evans to marry a woman infamous for making false promises in return for very real financial investments. The warnings were futile, however, if the rumors of the under-the-wraps wedding prove to be true.
Neither Holmes nor Evans has confirmed is they are officially husband and wife. While we may not know if the two said their vows in a cathedral or church outfitted with the common cruciform groundplan or what hors d’oeuvres they served at the reception, we do know that Holmes and Evans are as committed to one another as any average couple. One colleague of Evans said that he gave Holmes his MIT signet to mark their engagement. Evans opted for this beloved piece of jewelry over an extravagant diamond ring, indicating that he views their relationship, and possible marriage, as much more than a material scam.
