We can talk about sales growth, profit growth, asset growth, but all of this probably will not happen without personal growth. It's really the open door to it all. In fact I'd like to have you memorize a most important phrase. Here it is, "The major key to your better future is YOU." Let me repeat that. "The major key to your better future is YOU." Put that someplace you can see it everyday, in the bathroom, in the kitchen, at the office, anywhere where you can see it everyday. The major key to your better future is YOU. Try to remember that every day you live and think about it. The major key is YOU. Now, there are many things that will help your better future. If you belong to a strong, dynamic, progressive company, that would help. If the company has good products, good services that you are proud of, that would certainly help. If there were good sales aids, that would help, good training would certainly help. If there is strong leadership, that will certainly help. All of these things will help, and of course, if it doesn't storm, that will help. If your car doesn't break down, that will help. If the kids don't get sick, that will help. If the neighbors stay half way civil, that will help. If your relatives don't bug you, that will help. If it isn't too cold, if it isn't too hot, all those things will help your better future. And if prices don't go much higher and if taxes don't get much heavier, that will help. And if the economy stays stable, those things will all help. We could go on and on with the list; but remember this, the list of things that I've just covered and many more - all put together - play a minor role in your better future. The major key to your better future is you. Lock your mind onto that. This is a super important point to remember. The major key is you. A friend of mine has always answered when asked, "How do you develop an above average income?" He says, "Simple. Become an above average person. Work on you." My friend says, "Develop an above average handshake." He says, "A lot of people want to be successful, and they don't even work on their handshake. As easy as that would be to start, they let it slide. They don't understand." My friend says, "Develop an above average smile. Develop an above average excitement. Develop an above average dedication. Develop an above average interest in other people." He says, "To have more, become more." Remember; work harder on yourself than you do on your job. For a long time in my life, I didn't have this figured out. Strangely enough, with two different people in the same company one may earn an extra $100 a month, and the other may earn a $1,000. What could possibly be the difference? If the products were the same, if the training was the same, if they both had the same literature, the same tools. If they both had the same teacher, the same compensation plan, if they both attended the same meetings, why would one person earn the $100 per month and the other person earn the $1000? Remember here is the difference...the difference is personal, inside, not outside, inside. You see the real difference is inside you. In fact, the difference IS you. Someone once said, "The magic is not in the products. The magic is not in the literature. The magic is not in the film. There isn't a magic meeting, but the magic that makes things better is inside you, and personal growth makes this magic work for you. The magic is in believing. The magic is in daring. The magic is in trying. The real magic is in persevering. The magic is in accepting. It's in working. The magic is in thinking. There is magic in a handshake. There is magic in a smile. There is magic in excitement and determination. There is real magic in compassion and caring and sharing. There is unusual magic in strong feeling and you see, all that comes from inside, not outside. So, the difference is inside you. The real difference is you. You are the major key to your better future. We have this desire when we hate our occupation, when we stop moving toward a career we'll enjoy, when we can't even believe we could achieve our financial goals through something we love doing. When we're grinding our noses at grueling work, full-time loafing sounds great. Actually, it becomes miserably boring after only a few days. Fortunately, the middle ground between hating your work and loafing all the time is the most fun of all: stop working and start enjoying how you earn money. I haven't worked for years. Not that I've retired--few people have a heavier schedule than mine. I haven't worked for years because I love what I do. Let me give you my definition of work: Work is anything you're doing when you'd rather be doing something else. You can stop working too. There are just two steps to doing this, but both of them are big ones: (a) change your attitude, (b) guide your career into activities you love doing. The most gainful way you can be employed is at achieving the things you enjoy achieving. Why settle for less? You may make more money in the immediate future grunting along at work you hate. Over a longer time span your wealth and abilities will grow much faster doing work you love. Why is this true? When you hate your work, you spend more time, money, and energy on pleasure. Less, perhaps nothing, is left for learning, growing, and striking out toward new goals. Unless we see work we hate as nothing more than a temporary stage on our journey toward doing what we love doing, we'll stay in this trap. We won't sacrifice to accumulate those precious few dollars of capital that our first move toward success will require. =================================================== You can receive more information about Tom Hopkins as well as receive 20% off his audio and book products by going to http://www.yoursuccessstore.com ==================================================== What's In It For THEM? By Bob Burg ==================================================== We all want people to do what we want them to do. That's only natural. And there's nothing wrong with that, providing we also care about how the outcome affects them. So, how do we get people to do what we want, in a way they can feel like a winner as well? Through Positive Persuasion, of course. But in doing so, we must keep certain principles in mind, and base our win/win methods on those principles. For instance, as we've mentioned in previous issues, how do you effectively change the behavior of family members, friends, difficult neighbors, an unhelpful customer service representative, an "uncivil" civil servant, your kid's teacher, or practically anyone else . . . including prospects, customers and clients?? The principle we'll discuss in this week's issue was expertly taught by Dale Carnegie, author of the classic, "How to Win Friends and Influence People" (www.amazon.com). And that is: "People do things for their reasons, not ours." So make your reason, their reason. The fact is, their actions are always based on their own self-interest (Remember, even when giving charity, we do it because, since we believe it is right, it makes us feel good about ourselves). We have two choices; complain that life shouldn't be that way, or embrace the facts and utilize this principle for the benefit of all concerned. If your request is "not" one with which the other person need comply, you must give them a personal benefit for taking action! Find THEIR reason, and present your request with that in mind. Are you planning to ask your boss for a raise? Realizing she doesn't care that you are behind on your mortgage payment and really need the money, you're better off explaining that based on past performance, you could help her come in significantly under budget on the next project. That, of course, would make her look great to her superiors when she is seeking "her" raise (In other words, what's in it for HER?). Important point: Everyone's "reason" is not necessarily money. Feeling good about oneself is often the most powerful motivator of all! Difficult people, in particular, tend to have a poor self-image. So take a genuine, personal interest in those people. Show them more genuine respect than they receive from the average person. Find out their "why". What will move their emotional hot button to cause them to take the action you want him or her to take. What's in it for THEM ? If you nail that answer, the chances are they'll bend over backwards to make you happy. That's win/win persuasion! =================================================== Bob Burg is author of "Winning Without Intimidation" and "Endless referrals". Either we didn't think excellence in service was important, or we were so wrapped up in the service process that we'd forgotten what the end game was all about--- that of satisfied, happy, loyal customers. Enter the 2000 shift of focus from simply giving good customer service to understanding the more powerful and profitable position of customer focus. Picture the interdependent circles of your organization as links in a circular chain with a single purpose: satisfied, happy, loyal, referral bearing customers. In our global village, our customer's success is our success. Customer focus and partnerships and alliances are now inexorably bound together, There are three interdependent parts of true customer focus: First: Customer Servicing. This is the operations part, doing the task well. Second: Customer Relations. This is the human part, the one-on-one actions. Third: Customer Development. This is the sales and retention part that brings true satisfaction to every transaction. Your internal customers come first: Don't forget that an organization's first customer is its own people, your internal customers. Until they know you care about their needs and recognize them for their individual contribution, they'll never effectively serve others well. Which of course means that your message of service excellence will never get to your external customers. The speed of change, the development of partnerships and alliances and concentration on customer focus. These are the three major drivers that confront us as we rush toward the next millennium. We can be driven, pushed, pulled, and hustled along against our will. Or we can understand and embrace them, plan strategically for their affects on our organizations and literally jump out in front of our marketplace as pace setters.. The choice is ours. =================================================== To learn more about Sheila Murray Bethel and to save 20% when you purchase her audio's and books visit www.yoursuccessstore.com ==================================================== THE DESIRE OF A CHAMPION by Paul J. Meyer ==================================================== We have been told that talent creates its own opportunities. People who are successful year after year have PROVEN that intense DESIRE creates not only its own opportunities, but also its own talents. For these people, INTENSE, BURNING DESIRE has been developed as a HABIT... a WAY OF LIFE... a DELIBERATE COURSE OF DISSATISFACTION. This is the desire of a Champion in any line of work. INTENSE DESIRE is infinitely more than wanting or wishing... more than compulsion or stimulation. Desire is an overwhelming demand for change - a personal war with "things as they are" and the willingness to make any sacrifice to bring about that change. EVERY REVOLUTION IN HISTORY... in thought, government, ethics, art, religion, and science has been the result of one person's DESIRE to change the status quo... to win a race with time, custom, tradition, or himself. This is the reason that DESIRE burns like a WHITE HOT FLAME in the heart of every CHAMPION. DESIRE is the vital essence of a champion's inner self. WHAT IS DESIRE? DESIRE IS THE QUALITY THAT MAKES WINNERS in every walk of life. A person with activated DESIRE isn't nearly as afraid of losing as a loser is secretly afraid of winning! A person with DESIRE makes commitments; other people make promises. DESIRE makes a person go through a problem; other people go around them. DESIRE gives a person the knowledge and judgment as to when to say yes or no; ordinary people say maybe or perhaps at the wrong times and for the wrong reasons. DESIRE gives a person the courage to say, "I'm good, but not as good as I should be. " Ordinary people say, "I'm not as bad as a lot of other people." DESIRE engenders respect for those in authority; lack of desire breeds resentment. DESIRE makes individuals feel responsible for more than their jobs; ordinary people say, "I only work here." THERE IS A CERTAIN RESTLESSNESS, RECKLESSNESS, and AGGRESSIVENESS about DESIRE... An army, a nation, an organization, or a member of a sales force becomes tired and complacent when DESIRE is lost. And it makes no difference whether DESIRE falls to logic, self-satisfaction, or disillusion. Without it, the future is as barren as volcanic ash. It offers nothing that would surpass that which is or has been. The principal effect of BURNING DESIRE is that it separates those who set goals for success from those who merely daydream about it. It eliminates the plodders, the wanters, and the wishful thinkers. DESIRE brings forward people with insatiable appetites for competition, for action, for all the world has to offer. There is active self-awareness in desire. It gives its possessors the feeling that they have a mission to perform, a destiny to meet and conquer. I've never known anyone with intense desire who didn't work harder than those without it. People who lack desire are always too busy to do needs to be done. Intense desire also gives you the ability to know what to fight for... and when and where you should compromise. When desire is lacking, nothing is worth fighting for. BURNING DESIRE gives you a THIRST for COMPETITION. Personally, I love competition because it forces you to analyze yourself - to look closer at your own ability. And every time you look, your DESIRE becomes stronger; you want to accomplish greater things. People don't compete enough. They either devise an alibi or level off too soon. They're dominated by their personal standards. They're too easily satisfied with average living and average accomplishments. HOW DO YOU DEVELOP A BURNING DESIRE? You create DESIRE automatically whenever you challenge yourself! And the way we react to a challenge determines the destiny of our lives. WHEN DO YOU CHALLENGE YOURSELF? Every morning with each new day!! There are so many challenges waiting for you to accept: 1. New opportunities... 2. New prospects... 3. Beating yesterday's record... 4. Competing against yourself... and 5. Growing personally, a little more each day! I sincerely believe that the DESIRE with which you meet a challenge is the essential part of your soul. Without it you lack spiritual guidance and creative expression. Without DESIRE, you lack intuition - the still, small voice that gives you insight to situations and people. DESIRE IS INDEED AN UNLIMITED FORCE, but its possession doesn't mean that you still won't have to work hard, to face life's trials and make a few mistakes. There is an old Russian proverb that says: "THE SAME HAMMER THAT SHATTERS THE GLASS ALSO FORGES THE STEEL." The only way to merit membership into the WORLD OF SUCCESS is to strive continually to activate, stimulate, and maintain the kind of Desire that will make you a winner... the DESIRE OF A CHAMPION! =================================================== You can receive more information about Paul J Meyer and his products at www.yoursuccessstore.com Paul J.
